Understanding Design Principles

Balance/Contrast: The focus of the image (The man and the smoke) are set up on the right side of the album cover. This is balanced by the city in the background and the text that is on the left side of the cover. The image is set in grayscale, but the smoke off the man's cigarette is filled with vibrant colours. Emphasis/Alignment: The title of the album and the band name is smaller, making it easier to focus on the main subject of the cover; the man and the colourful smoke. The smoke being the only thing in colour helps put emphasis that it is part of the focus of the image. Rhythm/Repetition: The entire image is in flat, grayscale colour, keeping with a rhythm of not being too dark, but not too light either. Even the words are simply black. The variation in the rhythm comes from the smoke, which is colored but is separated from the grayscale by the white background.
